This fall, I had the immense pleasure of visiting the author Gary Smith and his cousin, Patrizia Bernardi, in the enchanting village of Muriaglio. Nestled in the heart of Italy's Piedmont region, Muriaglio is a hidden gem where history, nature, and culture converge to create a captivating escape. This charming Italian village, enveloped by rolling hills and scenic landscapes, feels untouched by time, making it the perfect retreat for those seeking tranquility and inspiration. It’s a place where you can wander off the beaten path and discover a world rich in tradition, lush beauty, and old-world allure.
As I approached Muriaglio, the sights and sounds of the Piedmont countryside unfolded before me, inviting me to immerse myself in nature’s serene embrace. Green forests, undulating vineyards, and meadows dotted with wildflowers stretched in every direction, offering a feast for the senses. The proximity to Lake Viverone adds another layer of charm, providing a pristine spot to unwind or enjoy a peaceful day by the water.
The lake, with its crystal-clear surface reflecting the surrounding mountains, is ideal for those quiet moments in nature, perhaps paired with a picnic of local cheeses and wine. Hiking trails wind through the countryside, leading to hidden viewpoints where you can simply stand still, breathe deeply, and let the beauty of Muriaglio sink in.
The village itself is a window into a different era, with its cobbled streets lined with ancient stone houses topped with rustic red-tiled roofs. In Muriaglio, each corner has a story, and every building has its place in the village's long history. The medieval church stands proudly as a central landmark, its frescoes and artwork preserved from centuries past. Stepping inside, I could feel the history that permeates the air, a quiet reverence for the countless generations that have called Muriaglio home. It’s a place that whispers secrets of ancient Italy, inviting visitors to connect with a simpler time.
Muriaglio’s charm transforms with the seasons. In spring, the fields burst with color, while summers bring warm, golden days perfect for wandering the trails or enjoying leisurely afternoons with views stretching across the Canavese area. Fall, however, is perhaps the most magical season here, as the forests transform into a vivid palette of amber, crimson, and ochre. Photographers and nature lovers flock to capture the enchantment of this time when Muriaglio feels like a living postcard. Winter brings a hushed beauty, with snow dusting the rooftops and mountains, making the village even more enchanting. The crisp winter air and the coziness of local cafes lend themselves to a slower pace, ideal for curling up with a glass of Barolo and simply savoring the moment.
Life in Muriaglio moves gently, and the locals welcome visitors with genuine warmth. Traditional Piedmontese customs are woven into the fabric of daily life, and there is no better way to experience this than by attending a village festival or tasting the region's rich cuisine. Patrizia Bernardi and Gary Smith are integral members of the community, involved with two organizations that operate in Muriaglio: the Agricultural Workers' Mutual Aid Society (SMSAO) and the Peter Sategna Foundation.
Founded in 1915, the SMSAO has always focused on supporting its members and the local community. Their mission includes assisting members with various mutual aid activities, such as healthcare contributions for specialized exams, scholarships for high school and university students, and free English courses in collaboration with the Peter Sategna Foundation. Additionally, they support local writers by hosting events dedicated to their publications. The Society also owns the restaurant La Terrazza, which is managed by a professional catering company, and all proceeds are used to support these valuable activities. The Peter Sategna Foundation, with Gary Smith as Honorary President, champions musical development for students worldwide, especially cellists and violinists, by offering scholarships that allow them to attend academies and masterclasses led by internationally renowned instructors. I was fortunate enough to witness painters in action and attend a coaching event hosted by Irene Viglia during my visit.
For those willing to explore beyond the familiar, Muriaglio offers an intimate glimpse into Italian heritage. It is a sanctuary of beauty and history, a place that lingers in your heart long after you’ve left. This village, with its blend of natural splendor, cultural richness, and heartfelt hospitality, captures everything wonderful about Italy in a single, unforgettable experience. I can't wait to return to Muriaglio and create more cherished memories.
