A silly story with heart! - Andra Gillum

Andra Gillum

Pet Shop Drama is the first chapter book in the Doggy Drama series! After writing five picture books about my real dogs, Riley, Lucy and Rosy, I challenged myself to make the story bigger and better! It was a lot of work, but I am so excited to share it with young readers. It is funny and silly with a heart.

Pet Shop Drama is the story of two sisters. Riley is older and more responsible. Lucy is younger and a little wild. When they find themselves trapped inside a pet shop after dark, it’s a struggle between having fun and getting home safely. They meet all sorts of pets, taste a lot of treats, and make a few new friends as they try to find a way out of the locked store. Will they destroy the entire store, or find a way home before morning?

When Lucy notices the back gate is open, she convinces Riley to go on an adventure. The plan is to sneak over to the local pet store to have a look around and be back before dinner. But when they get locked in the store after dark…those plans change!

All responsible Riley can think about is getting home safely, or at least letting mom know that they're OK. All little Lucy can think about is tasting the treats, playing with the toys, and meeting the other animals.

Doggy Drama books, by Andra Gillum

As they try to find their way out of the locked store, they enlist the help of some new friends including the cats Tigra and Storm and Sailor the dog. They try a few things and hatch a few plans, but nothing seems to work.

Plus, Lucy keeps getting distracted by all of the fun things going on in the store.

After a few failed attempts, they accidentally set off the fire alarm. The fire department shows up and makes sure they get home safely.

Mom is thrilled to have them home, but she is not happy that they ran away. What will their punishment be?

With their heads down and their tails between their legs, the dogs take their punishment as a team. Like any siblings, Riley and lucy definitely do not agree on everything. They fight sometimes, but in the end, they appreciate and love each other.

This book is quite personal in many ways. Of course, it is about my real westies and my real family. I am “Mom” in the story. I also feature many pets from my real life who I have walked or taken care of, or just met in the neighborhood.

You’ll find lots of real photos of Riley, Lucy and many of these pets in real life. I hope it gives the reader a real connection!

Finally, the book is dedicated to my real-life big sister, who has always been the responsible one. She is the Riley to my Lucy. The Author’s Note section in the back of the book shares some true stories that illustrate this point!

I hope that kids will laugh out loud at this silly story, but also relate it to their own relationships with their siblings or family. It's normal to fight with your brothers and sisters, but in the end, it’s important to have each other's back. Pet Shop Drama is a silly story with a heart!
